Public Health Snapshot

Women who give birth before the age of 20 create educational and economic disadvantages for themselves and the community, and their babies face increased health risks compared to those born to older mothers. This week's Snapshot is a six-year chart of the percentage of Mississippi females 15 to 19 years old giving birth to children. While the rate of such teen births has been decreasing in the state since 2000, it rose for the first time in 2006. Mississippi was not alone in this rise; 2006 saw a nationwide upturn in the teen birth rate for the first time in 14 years.
