Hydrogen Fluoride Incident in Rankin County

March 2, 2006 — The Mississippi Department of Health is working with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and local law enforcement officials in response to an overturned tanker with hydrogen fluoride on Interstate 20.

A spill has not occurred. At this time, no hydrogen fluoride has been released; however, it is important for residents in the affected area to know the following information:

  • Hydrogen fluoride is a chemical compound that contains fluorine and is a colorless gas.
  • Hydrogen fluoride gas, even at low levels, can irritate the eyes, nose and respiratory tract.
  • Breathing in hydrogen fluoride at high levels or in combination with skin contact can cause death from an irregular heartbeat or from fluid buildup in the lungs.
  • Skin contact with hydrogen fluoride may cause no immediate signs of exposure.
  • Depending on the concentration of the chemical and the length of time of exposure, skin contact may cause severe pain at the point of contact, a rash, and burns.

Health officials advise that if you think you have been exposed to hydrogen fluoride, you should remove your clothing, rapidly wash your entire body with water, and receive medical care as quickly as possible.

The Mississippi Department of Health encourages residents in the affected area to stay tuned to their local radio and television stations for the latest news.
