Physician, Senior

Position Opening: Physician, Senior & District Health Officer, Districts II and IV

The Mississippi State Department of Health is soliciting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Physician, Senior and the role of District Health Officer. This position serves as the county public health officer for the following counties in northeast Mississippi:

  • District II – Marshall, Benton, Tippah, Alcorn, Tishomingo, Lafayette, Union, Pontotoc, Lee, Prentiss and Itawamba.
  • District IV – Calhoun, Chickasaw, Monroe, Webster, Clay, Choctaw, Oktibbeha, Lowndes, Winston and Noxubee.

The District Health Officer is charged by the State Health Officer and Board of Health with facilitating the health interests of the residents of the above named counties and enforcing the State laws and Board of Health Regulations.

Duties: The District Health Officer position reports to the State Health Officer and is primarily responsible for duties as follows:

  • Provides medical leadership for public health programs including communicable disease prevention and control, environmental health, maternal and child health, and emergency preparedness and response.
  • Serves as a hearing officer for public health regulatory functions such as child care licensure and individual operating waste water systems.
  • Provides clinical management and leadership for physicians and nurse practitioners practicing in the Districts II and IV county health departments.
  • Actively participates in district health officer staff meetings and serves on public health committees, special initiatives, or task forces when assigned.
  • Renders consultative services to and works collaboratively with public officials, community organizations, hospitals, and professional groups throughout Districts II and IV.
  • Effectively executes the strategies, programs, responsibilities or duties as may be assigned by the State Health Officer.

Qualifications: The minimum qualifications for this position are:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of medicine
  • License to practice medicine in the State of Mississippi

Preference will be given to Board Certified physicians and candidates with public health related experiences, training, certifications and degrees, including but not limited to Master's in Public Health.
