The Flex Program provides funding to States to help sustain the rural healthcare infrastructure, with Critical Access Hospitals
as the hub of an organized system of care. Critical Access Hospitals are acute care facilities with "25 beds or less" that provide
outpatient, emergency and limited inpatient services, and that are recognized as a provider type eligible for cost-based
Medicare reimbursement. The FLEX Program also includes a State Rural Health Plan, Networks, and Quality Improvement
and EMS initiatives. Mississippi currently has 27 critical access hospitals.
