Facts about the common cold:
- Colds are caused by viruses that get into your nose and throat.
- There are two hundred or more different viruses that cause the symptoms we describe as a cold.
- One of the most common is the rhinovirus. Rhino means “nose.”
- On average, children get six to10 colds a year, and adults get two to three.
- Prevent a cold by washing your hands frequently with soap and water, and by not touching your nose and eyes.
- Avoid spreading a cold by covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, preferably with a tissue.
