Environmental Lead Program
The lead program specialist of the Mississippi
Department of Health does environmental
assessments of dwellings frequented by children with
elevated blood lead levels. These are defined as
a single venous blood lead level > 20 mcg/dl or two venous
blood lead levels of 15-19 mcg/dl at least three months
apart.

These assessments use an X-ray fluorescence
analyzer to determine the amount of lead on painted surfaces and
taking dust, soil and water samples that are submitted to
laboratories to determine the amounts of lead in them. The lead
program specialist also uses qualitative testers with rhodizonate
to detect lead in vinyl miniblinds, ceramic ware, and ceramic
tubs and sinks.
The data collected is then used to prepare a report of the
lead hazards found at a dwelling and recommendations for reducing
those hazards. Copies of each report are sent to the parents of
each child with an elevated blood lead level, each child’s
health care provider(s), and the legal owner of each dwelling
inspected.
