U.S. diabetes cases increase 15 percent in two years
The number of Americans with diabetes jumped by 15 percent in two years to 24 million, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 8 percent of the population now has the disease, mainly type 2 diabetes, and another 57 million may have pre-diabetic symptoms.

■ Public Health Snapshot
U.S. cases of diabetes have jumped in the last two years, and Mississippi is part of that trend. This week's Snapshot compares diabetes cases reported
by participants in the Behavioral Risk Factor Survey in recent years. The percentage of Mississippians surveyed who reported a diagnosis of diabetes
rose sharply in 2006, and again in 2007. Mississippi's 2007 diabetes rate is 11.1%, compared to the 2007 national average of 8%. Mississippi's rate has increased 13.3 percent since 2005.
