The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is extending the immunization waiver of the two-dose requirement for the varicella vaccine (chickenpox vaccine) for children entering Mississippi schools in the fall. The original waiver was issued in November. Children entering school during the 2008-2009 school year will be required to have at least one dose of varicella vaccine or a history of chickenpox.
The waiver is due to delays in vaccine availability. School superintendents, administrators and healthcare providers have been advised of this change. Children entering school without two doses of varicella vaccine will not be considered out of compliance with vaccine requirements.
The waiver is for school entry during the 2008-2009 school year only. The second dose of varicella vaccine is needed and should be received at the standard age of four to six years if available. Check with your private health provider or health department clinic for availability.
The two-dose varicella vaccine requirement for school entry will be updated and appropriate notification given as supply difficulties are resolved.
