Immunization Requirements for Varicella Vaccination Waived Until 2008-2009 School Year
November 26, 2007

The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is waiving the two-dose requirement for the varicella vaccination (chickenpox vaccine) for children entering Mississippi schools during the 2007-2008 school year. Children entering school this school year will be required to have at least one dose of varicella vaccine or a history of chickenpox.

The waiver is due to delays in vaccine availability. School superintendents, administrators and healthcare providers have been advised of this change. Children who currently have an incomplete Immunization Compliance Form (Form 121) and children entering school with just one dose of varicella vaccine will not be considered out of compliance with vaccine requirements.

The waiver is for school entry during the 2007-2008 school year only. The second dose of varicella vaccine is needed and should be received at the standard age of four to six years if available. Check with your private health provider or health department clinic for availability.

The two-dose varicella vaccine requirement for school entry for the 2008-2009 school year will be updated and appropriate notification given as supply difficulties are resolved.
