| October 16 - 22 Marks Radon Action Awareness Week |
October 14, 2005 — Mississippians can find out what level of radon exists in their home, thanks to free radon kits available through the Mississippi Department of Health (MDH) during National Radon Action Week, October 16-22.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. More than 20,000 Americans die of radon-related lung cancer each year, and radon causes up to 15 percent of lung cancers worldwide.
"Radon enters the environment from the soil and can attach to dust and other particles in the air," said MDH Director of Radiological Health Bob Goff. "Radon can build up to dangerous levels in homes, schools and other buildings by coming through the cracks in foundations and cellar walls."
Mississippians can obtain a free radon kit to test their homes or businesses, while supplies last, by calling the MDH Radon Information Line at 1-800-626-7739.
The free radon test kit will come with a self-addressed envelope so that residents can send it directly to the lab for testing and analysis. Homeowners will then receive their test results from MDH.
