Special Microbiology Division
The Special Microbiology Division performs cultures and susceptibilities on various clinical samples. Parasitic exams and rabies testing are also conducted. This lab works closely with Epidemiology in Infectious Disease outbreaks and foodborne illness outbreaks. This division also assists with the identification and detection of bioterrorism agents.

Tests and Technology

Tests Performed

  • Bacteria: Testing is performed on clinical samples for the identification and susceptibility of bacteria.
  • Parasites: Parasite exams are performed on various clinical samples.
  • Rabies: Rabies testing on animals is also offered.
  • Food: A limited amount of food testing is available for epidemiological investigations.
  • Bioterrorism: Bioterrorism testing is also performed according to the Laboratory Response Network (LRN) Protocols.

Technology

Conventional culture methods are used for the isolation of bacteria. The MicroScan System is used for identification and susceptibility of bacteria. Other overnight identification systems are also on hand. We follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Protocol for rabies testing.

Laboratory Services Request
The guidelines for sample collection, transport, and ordering can be obtained from the Laboratory Services Guide. All requests for clinical testing must be made by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner.
