Rabies Clinics

MDH reminds you that pets need their vaccinations, too.

Mississippi law requires rabies vaccination by a licensed veterinarian for all dogs and cats over three months of age; again at one year, and at least every three years thereafter.

Licensed veterinarians administer rabies vaccine to dogs and cats on a regular basis throughout Mississippi. The cost is low, usually $5 for each pet. For safety, we ask that all animals be on a leash or in a pet carrier. Mississippi state law requires rabies vaccination for all dogs and cats over three months of age. A followup vaccination is required at one year of age, and at least every three years thereafter.

The Mississippi Department of Health, the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association and the Mississippi Board of Animal Health all encourage rabies vaccination of as many dogs and cats as possible to prevent spread of the disease.

The rabies virus continues to be identified in domestic and wild animals in the states that border Mississippi. According to health officials, 1965 was the last time rabies was identified in a Mississippi land animal such as a dog, cat, racoon or fox. Mississippi continues to see at least two rabid bats on an annual basis, evidence that rabies is present in the state.
